The South Texas Amateur Athletic Union is a division of the Amateur Athletic Union, which is one of the largest, volunteer, non-profit organisations in America. Its main goal is the development and promotion of physical fitness programs and amateur sports, covering a wide range of sporting disciplines. After its inception in 1888 by William Buckingham Curtis, it was relied upon to set guidelines and consistency throughout different amateur sports. It was also heavily involved in representing the US in international sports and worked closely in particular with the Olympic movement to help prepare American athletes for the Olympics.
It was only after the Amateur Sports Act in 1978 that the AAU focused its efforts on ensuring that people of all ages had access to sports programs at both regional and local levels. It adhered to the philosophy “Sports for All, Forever.” It is divided up into 56 Districts, of which South Texas is one that annually approves and organises 34 sports programs, 250 national leagues and championships, as well as 30,000 age specific events. There are a total of around 50,000 volunteers and 500,000 participants.
